A recent article on CNN.com explained the recent successes of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as well as the possibility for millions to lose coverage due to the end of the pandemic’s national public health emergency.

Under the current presidential administration, benefits of the ACA were temporarily expanded under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Biden attempted to make these expanded benefits permanent with his Build Back Better Bill, but that attempt has stalled in Congress.

If ARPA benefits end in mid-July 2022 without anything put in place to make the ACA and Medicaid portions permanent, millions could lose their health insurance coverage or see increases in their premiums on policies purchased through an ACA Marketplace.

This would be a huge setback to the gains made in recent years, with the uninsured rate in the country at a near-record low of 8.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2021.
